Product Description
Bring big power to your HO railroad with the WalthersMainline SD70M! Introduced in 1992 and built through 2004, this later "modified" (as noted by the "M" in the model designation) version of the EMD SD70, was equipped with a wide nose and North American Safety Cab.
Conrail and the SD70
Conrail, officially the Consolidated Rail Corporation, was created in 1976 to rescue several bankrupt Northeastern railroads and restore reliable freight rail service across the region. Known for its bright blue locomotives and famous white “can opener” logo, Conrail became one of the most successful railroads of the 1980s and 1990s, modernizing rail operations throughout the Northeast and Midwest. The railroad handled a wide variety of traffic including intermodal, automotive, general merchandise, and heavy coal service from the Appalachian coal fields.
Coal transportation played a major role in Conrail’s operations, with long unit coal trains moving coal from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio to power plants, steel mills, and export terminals across the eastern United States. Heavy coal drags became one of the railroad’s signature operations and remain a favorite subject for railfans and modelers.
The EMD SD70 series represented Conrail’s move into a new generation of high-horsepower freight locomotives during the 1990s. Built for demanding mainline service, SD70 locomotives offered improved reliability, modern electronics, and increased pulling power for heavy freight assignments. Conrail SD70s were commonly seen leading intermodal trains, manifest freights, and coal service during the railroad’s final years before being split between CSX and Norfolk Southern in 1999. Today, former Conrail SD70 locomotives continue operating across North America under their successor railroads, helping preserve the legacy of Conrail’s modern era.
