Product Description

Bring big power to your HO railroad with the WalthersMainline SD70M! Introduced in 1992 and built through 2004, this later "modified" (as noted by the "M" in the model designation) version of the EMD SD70, was equipped with a wide nose and North American Safety Cab.

Southern Pacific and the SD70M

Southern Pacific, often abbreviated as SP, was one of the most iconic railroads in the American West, tracing its roots back to the 1860s. Famous for its dramatic mountain routes, extensive California operations, and distinctive scarlet-and-gray locomotives, Southern Pacific served much of the western United States including California, Texas, Oregon, and Arizona. The railroad hauled everything from agricultural products and intermodal traffic to lumber, automobiles, and heavy industrial freight. SP also became well known for its challenging mountain operations over Donner Pass and the rugged Tehachapi Loop.

The EMD SD70M represented one of Southern Pacific’s final generations of new locomotive power before the railroad merged into Union Pacific in 1996. SP’s SD70Ms featured the railroad’s bold “Speed Lettering” paint scheme and modern wide-nose safety cab design, making them some of the most recognizable late-era Southern Pacific locomotives. Built for heavy freight service, the 4,000-horsepower SD70M was commonly assigned to intermodal trains, manifest freights, and western mainline operations. Because the locomotives arrived during SP’s final independent years, they have become especially popular among railfans and modelers as symbols of the railroad’s last modern era before the Union Pacific merger.
