Introduced in the late 1960s especially for lumber service, the 56' Thrall All-Door Boxcar from WalthersProto(R) makes a unique and colorful addition to HO freight operations. Designed to protect weather-sensitive building materials and simplify loading and unloading, the design featured large sliding side doors for easy access, and many remained in service into the early 2000s.

Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley and the 56' Thrall Boxcar

The Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad operates through the scenic countryside of central New York, preserving the region’s rich railroading heritage while continuing freight and excursion operations along former Delaware & Hudson trackage. Historically tied to agriculture, feed mills, lumber, and local industry, the railroad has served as an important transportation link for rural communities in Otsego County. Freight equipment such as the 56' Thrall All-Door Boxcar proved especially useful for handling lumber products, paper shipments, and palletized goods that required wide loading access and protection from the elements. The car’s innovative all-door design allowed shippers along the line to efficiently move bulky freight while supporting the railroad’s flexible shortline operations.
