Introduced in the late 1960s especially for lumber service, the 56' Thrall All-Door Boxcar from WalthersProto(R) makes a unique and colorful addition to HO freight operations. Designed to protect weather-sensitive building materials and simplify loading and unloading, the design featured large sliding side doors for easy access, and many remained in service into the early 2000s.

Illinois Terminal and the 56' Thrall Boxcar

The Illinois Terminal Railroad was a unique Midwestern carrier that combined interurban passenger service with a strong freight business across Illinois and neighboring states. Over time, the railroad became heavily focused on freight operations, serving industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, coal, and paper production throughout the region. To efficiently move large and bulky commodities, Illinois Terminal utilized specialized freight equipment like the 56' Thrall All-Door Boxcar. The car’s full-length side doors provided excellent access for loading palletized products, paper shipments, and building materials, making it a valuable asset for shippers requiring fast handling and protected transportation across the railroad’s diverse industrial network.
