Introduced in the late 1960s especially for lumber service, the 56' Thrall All-Door Boxcar offered railroads and shippers an innovative solution for transporting weather-sensitive building materials. Rather than relying on conventional boxcar doors, the design featured large sliding side doors that provided extensive access to the car's interior.

This unusual arrangement made loading and unloading lumber and other bulky building materials significantly easier while still providing the protection of an enclosed freight car. These distinctive cars remained in service into the early 2000s, giving modelers plenty of opportunities to incorporate them into freight operations spanning several decades.
