Product Description
Prototypes for the WalthersProto HO Scale 65' Mill Gondola are workhorse freight cars of the steel industry. From raw materials to finished goods to scrap metal, the steel industry has long been big business for railroads. Based on a Thrall mill gondola design, the WalthersProto model is accurately sized with sharply molded ribs and rivets that match prototype photos and drawings. Grab irons and ladders are factory applied separate parts. The car's underbody features separate brake components and piping.
Burlington Northern & the 65' Thrall Mill Gondola
Burlington Northern Railroad (BN) was formed in 1970 through the merger of several major railroads, including the Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Chicago Burlington & Quincy, and Spokane, Portland & Seattle railroads. The merger created one of the largest rail systems in the United States, stretching from the Pacific Northwest and Upper Midwest to Texas and the Gulf Coast. Burlington Northern became a major transporter of coal, grain, lumber, and intermodal freight, serving industries across the western United States with a modern and efficient freight network. Known for its distinctive Cascade Green locomotives and large freight operations, BN later merged with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway in 1995 to form today’s BNSF Railway.
Burlington Northern operated 65' Thrall Mill Gondolas in a variety of heavy-duty freight services including lumber, steel, pipe, scrap metal, and industrial materials transportation. Designed with high sides and rugged construction, the 65' Thrall Mill Gondola was ideal for handling oversized and bulky loads across BN’s extensive western rail network. These gondolas were commonly seen moving forest products from the Pacific Northwest, steel products from industrial centers, and other large freight commodities throughout the Midwest and western United States. Painted in Burlington Northern’s recognizable green freight car schemes, the cars became important components of the railroad’s modern freight operations during the 1970s through the 1990s.
