Product Description

Prototypes for the WalthersProto HO Scale 65' Mill Gondola are workhorse freight cars of the steel industry. From raw materials to finished goods to scrap metal, the steel industry has long been big business for railroads. Based on a Thrall mill gondola design, the WalthersProto model is accurately sized with sharply molded ribs and rivets that match prototype photos and drawings. Grab irons and ladders are factory applied separate parts. The car's underbody features separate brake components and piping.

Canadian National & the 65' Thrall Mill Gondola

Canadian National Railway (CN) was formed in 1919 through the consolidation of several bankrupt and government-owned railroads, eventually becoming Canada’s largest railroad system. Operating across Canada and into the United States, CN developed into a vital transportation network linking the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf coasts. The railroad became a major hauler of grain, forest products, minerals, petroleum, intermodal traffic, and manufactured goods across North America. Known for its distinctive black, red, and white paint schemes and extensive transcontinental operations, Canadian National remains one of the most important freight railroads on the continent today.

Canadian National operated 65' Thrall Mill Gondolas in a wide variety of heavy-duty freight services including lumber, steel, pipe, scrap metal, and industrial material transportation. Designed with high sides and durable construction, the 65' Thrall Mill Gondola was well suited for hauling bulky and oversized loads across CN’s vast rail network in both Canada and the United States. These gondolas were commonly seen moving forest products from Canadian mills, steel products from industrial centers, and other large freight commodities in mixed freight service. Painted in Canadian National’s recognizable freight car schemes, the cars became important parts of modern freight operations from the 1970s through the 1990s.
