Product Description

Prototypes for the WalthersProto HO Scale 65' Mill Gondola are workhorse freight cars of the steel industry. From raw materials to finished goods to scrap metal, the steel industry has long been big business for railroads. Based on a Thrall mill gondola design, the WalthersProto model is accurately sized with sharply molded ribs and rivets that match prototype photos and drawings. Grab irons and ladders are factory applied separate parts. The car's underbody features separate brake components and piping.

CSX & the 65' Thrall Mill Gondola

CSX Transportation was created in 1986 through the merger of Chessie System and Seaboard System railroads, combining the operations of several historic eastern railroads including the Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio, Seaboard Coast Line, Louisville & Nashville, and others. The railroad quickly became one of the largest freight carriers in the eastern United States, operating an extensive network from the Midwest to the Atlantic Coast and throughout the Southeast. CSX transports a wide range of commodities including coal, intermodal traffic, automobiles, chemicals, agricultural products, and manufactured goods. Known for its dark blue and yellow locomotive paint schemes, CSX continues to play a major role in North American freight transportation.

CSX operated 65' Thrall Mill Gondolas in a variety of heavy-duty freight services including lumber, steel, scrap metal, pipe, and industrial material transportation. Built with rugged construction and high sides, the 65' Thrall Mill Gondola was designed to handle oversized and bulky loads moving across the railroad’s large eastern freight network. These gondolas were commonly seen in mixed freight and industrial service hauling forest products, fabricated steel, and other heavy commodities between mills, ports, and manufacturing centers. Painted in CSX freight car schemes, the cars became important components of the railroad’s modern freight operations during the 1980s and 1990s.
