WalthersProto EMD GP60 Diesel Locomotive

BNSF HO Scale Pre-Order Locomotive

Add the last of EMD’s famed “Geeps” to your HO roster with a highly detailed GP60 built for modern freight and intermodal service.

Product Overview

Add the last of Electro-Motive Division's famed "Geeps" to your HO roster with the WalthersProto EMD GP60 diesel locomotive. Built between 1985 and 1994, the prototype featured state-of-the-art microprocessor systems and a 3,800 hp 16-cylinder 710G3A prime mover. These four axle units could be found on priority intermodal and fast freight assignments and continue to serve on class one railroads into the 2020s. The GP60 also accurately recreates the prototype with upgraded tooling and roadname-specific details.

BNSF and the GP60

BNSF Railway was created in 1995 through the merger of Burlington Northern Railroad and the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway, combining two of the most historic railroads in the western United States. The merger formed one of North America’s largest freight rail systems, operating across the Midwest, Southwest, Pacific Northwest, and California. BNSF became a leader in intermodal transportation, coal service, agricultural shipments, and consumer goods movement, serving major ports and industrial centers throughout the country. Known for its orange-and-black locomotive paint schemes and massive modern freight operations, BNSF remains one of the busiest and most recognizable railroads in North America.

BNSF operated the EMD GP60 locomotive extensively following the merger, inheriting fleets from both Burlington Northern and Santa Fe. Built by Electro-Motive Division with 3,800 horsepower, the GP60 was designed for fast freight and intermodal service, featuring upgraded electronics and strong four-axle performance. BNSF used GP60 locomotives on priority merchandise trains, stack trains, and general freight assignments across its vast western network. Many of the locomotives retained Burlington Northern or Santa Fe paint schemes for years after the merger, while others later received BNSF lettering and paint, making the GP60 an important part of the railroad’s late 20th-century diesel operations.

Why We Love This Model

The GP60 is a fascinating bridge between classic four-axle Geeps and the more advanced, computer-controlled diesel era. For BNSF modelers, it offers great operational flexibility, working just as well on fast intermodal trains as it does in general freight service. The roadname-specific details, lighting features, and WalthersProto-level finish make this a standout locomotive for modern and late-1990s diesel rosters.
