Product Description

Add the last of Electro-Motive Division's famed "Geeps" to your HO roster with the WalthersProto EMD GP60 diesel locomotive. Built between 1985 and 1994, the prototype featured state-of-the-art microprocessor systems and a 3,800 hp 16-cylinder 710G3A prime mover. These four axle units could be found on priority intermodal and fast freight assignments and continue to serve on class one railroads into the 2020s. The GP60 also accurately recreates the prototype with upgraded tooling and roadname-specific details.

Rio Grande and the GP60

The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, commonly known as the Rio Grande, was one of America’s most famous mountain railroads, operating across Colorado, Utah, and the Rocky Mountain region. Founded in 1870, the railroad became known for its rugged mountain routes, steep grades, and spectacular scenery while hauling coal, minerals, agricultural products, and general freight. The Rio Grande earned a legendary reputation through its powerful locomotive fleet and famous passenger services such as the California Zephyr. Its bold black-and-orange paint schemes and dramatic mountain operations made the railroad a favorite among railfans before it eventually became part of the Southern Pacific system and later Union Pacific.

Denver & Rio Grande Western operated the EMD GP60 locomotive during the late 1980s and early 1990s as part of the railroad’s modern diesel fleet used for fast freight and intermodal service. Built by Electro-Motive Division and rated at 3,800 horsepower, the GP60 featured advanced electronics and strong four-axle performance that made it well suited for priority freight operations across the Rio Grande’s challenging mountain territory. The locomotives were commonly assigned to merchandise freights, intermodal trains, and time-sensitive traffic moving through Colorado and Utah. Painted in the Rio Grande’s iconic black-and-orange scheme with large “Rio Grande” lettering, the GP60 became one of the railroad’s standout modern diesel locomotives during its final years of independent operation.
