Product Description

Add the last of Electro-Motive Division's famed "Geeps" to your HO roster with the WalthersProto EMD GP60 diesel locomotive. Built between 1985 and 1994, the prototype featured state-of-the-art microprocessor systems and a 3,800 hp 16-cylinder 710G3A prime mover. These four axle units could be found on priority intermodal and fast freight assignments and continue to serve on class one railroads into the 2020s. The GP60 also accurately recreates the prototype with upgraded tooling and roadname-specific details.

Southern Pacific and the GP60

Southern Pacific Railroad (SP) was one of the most influential railroads in the western United States, operating an extensive network across California, Texas, the Southwest, and the Pacific Coast. Founded in the 1860s, the railroad became famous for its dramatic mountain routes, coastal operations, and important role in transporting agricultural products, automobiles, petroleum, and intermodal freight. Southern Pacific was also well known for its distinctive “Bloody Nose” red-and-gray locomotive paint scheme and its innovative freight operations across challenging western terrain. In 1996, the railroad was merged into Union Pacific, though Southern Pacific remains one of the most celebrated fallen flag railroads among railfans and historians.

Southern Pacific operated the EMD GP60 locomotive extensively beginning in the late 1980s as part of its modernization efforts during the final years of independent SP operations. Built by Electro-Motive Division between 1985 and 1994, the GP60 featured 3,800 horsepower and improved electronic systems that provided excellent performance for fast freight and intermodal service. Southern Pacific became one of the largest GP60 operators, using the locomotives on priority freight trains, stack trains, and general merchandise service throughout the western United States. Many SP GP60s wore the railroad’s iconic “Bloody Nose” paint scheme, making them standout locomotives during the transition era before Union Pacific absorbed the fleet following the merger.
