Product Description

Add the last of Electro-Motive Division's famed "Geeps" to your HO roster with the WalthersProto EMD GP60 diesel locomotive. Built between 1985 and 1994, the prototype featured state-of-the-art microprocessor systems and a 3,800 hp 16-cylinder 710G3A prime mover. These four axle units could be found on priority intermodal and fast freight assignments and continue to serve on class one railroads into the 2020s. The GP60 also accurately recreates the prototype with upgraded tooling and roadname-specific details.

Cotton Belt and the GP60

The St. Louis Southwestern Railway, better known as the Cotton Belt Route or simply the Cotton Belt, was a major regional railroad serving the southern United States. Founded in the late 1800s, the railroad operated primarily in Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, and Louisiana, hauling large volumes of cotton, agricultural products, lumber, and industrial freight. Closely affiliated with Southern Pacific for much of its later history, the Cotton Belt became known for its dependable freight operations and distinctive locomotives painted in Southern Pacific-inspired schemes. The railroad officially merged into Southern Pacific in 1992, but the Cotton Belt name remains highly respected among railfans and historians.

Cotton Belt operated the EMD GP60 locomotive during the late 1980s and early 1990s as part of Southern Pacific’s modern locomotive fleet. Built by Electro-Motive Division with 3,800 horsepower, the GP60 was designed for fast freight and intermodal service, offering improved fuel efficiency and upgraded electronic controls compared to earlier GP-series locomotives. Many Cotton Belt GP60s were painted in the railroad’s eye-catching red and gray “Speed Lettering” scheme, making them some of the most recognizable locomotives of the era. These locomotives regularly handled priority freight, stack trains, and general merchandise service across the Southwest and western United States during the final years of independent Southern Pacific operations.
