Product Description

Add the last of Electro-Motive Division's famed "Geeps" to your HO roster with the WalthersProto EMD GP60 diesel locomotive. Built between 1985 and 1994, the prototype featured state-of-the-art microprocessor systems and a 3,800 hp 16-cylinder 710G3A prime mover. These four axle units could be found on priority intermodal and fast freight assignments and continue to serve on class one railroads into the 2020s. The GP60 also accurately recreates the prototype with upgraded tooling and roadname-specific details.

Union Pacific and the GP60

Union Pacific Railroad (UP) was founded in 1862 as part of the effort to build America’s first transcontinental railroad, connecting the eastern rail network with the Pacific Coast. Over the decades, Union Pacific expanded into one of the largest freight railroads in North America through growth, mergers, and acquisitions of major western railroads. The railroad became known for hauling agricultural products, coal, automobiles, chemicals, intermodal traffic, and manufactured goods across the western two-thirds of the United States. Recognized worldwide for its iconic yellow locomotives and long history of innovation, Union Pacific remains one of the most important freight transportation companies in the industry today.

Union Pacific operated the EMD GP60 locomotive beginning in the late 1980s as part of the railroad’s push toward more modern, high-horsepower four-axle freight power. Built by Electro-Motive Division with 3,800 horsepower, the GP60 featured upgraded electronics and strong performance that made it ideal for fast freight, intermodal, and priority merchandise service. Union Pacific used GP60s extensively across its western network, where the locomotives became common sights on stack trains and high-priority freights. Many of the locomotives wore Union Pacific’s classic yellow and gray paint scheme with red lettering, helping establish the GP60 as one of the railroad’s signature modern diesel locomotives during the late 20th century.
